Main entrance
The entrance is the mouth of the home. Keep it well lit and clutter free, ensure the door opens inward and clockwise, and place a Ganesh or toran above the frame. Avoid shoe racks and dustbins directly at the door.
Kitchen and cooking direction
The south-east is the Agni corner and the ideal kitchen location, with the cook facing east. Where the builder has placed the kitchen elsewhere, keep the gas stove in the south-east of that room and avoid placing the stove and sink adjacent to each other.
Bedroom
The master bedroom is best in the south-west. Sleep with the head towards the south or east. Mirrors should not face the bed, and heavy storage is better along the southern and western walls.
Puja room
The north-east is the ideal zone for the puja space, with idols facing west or east. Avoid placing the puja unit against a bathroom wall or under a staircase, and keep the space clean and free of stored items.
When a Vastu Shanti puja is the right step
When the layout cannot be changed — as in most apartments — a Vastu Shanti puja with havan addresses the dosh at the level of energy. It is also recommended before Griha Pravesh, after major renovation and when a home has had persistent unrest.
FAQs
- Do I need to break walls to fix vastu dosh?
- Rarely. The shastras prescribe puja, yantra, metals, light and placement corrections first. Structural change is the last resort.
- Is vastu applicable to rented flats?
- Yes. Placement, direction of sleeping and cooking, lighting and a Vastu Shanti puja all apply equally to rented homes.
