What is Griha Pravesh and why it matters
Griha Pravesh is the Vedic ceremony performed before a family occupies a new home for the first time. In the Hindu view a house is not merely a structure — it has a presiding energy, the Vastu Purush, and the ceremony formally requests his blessing before the family settles in.
The puja does three things at once: it purifies the physical space, it establishes the family's sankalp in that space, and it invokes Lakshmi and the kuldevta to remain present in the home.
Choosing the right Griha Pravesh muhurat
Muhurat selection considers the tithi, nakshatra, weekday and the position of Guru and Shukra. Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha are traditionally favoured months, while Kharmas, Chaturmas, Shraddh paksha and Amavasya are avoided.
- Preferred nakshatras: Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Revati
- Avoid Tuesdays and Saturdays for the main entry
- Rikta tithis (4, 9, 14) are not used for Griha Pravesh

Keeping the samagri ready the previous evening prevents delays on the morning of the ceremony, when the muhurat window is often short.
- Kalash, coconut, mango leaves, red cloth and moli
- Roli, akshat, haldi, kumkum, camphor, incense and diya
- Panchamrit — milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar
- Havan kund, mango samidha, hawan samagri and ghee

Step-by-step Griha Pravesh vidhi
The sequence below is the standard North Indian vidhi that our pandits follow. Regional traditions add or reorder a few steps, which the pandit will confirm with the elders of the family beforehand.
- Ganesh puja and Kalash sthapana at the entrance
- Punyahavachan and sprinkling of gangajal through every room
- Vastu Purush puja and Vastu Shanti path
- Navagraha sthapana and havan with purnahuti
- Entry with the right foot first, led by the lady of the house
- Boiling of milk in the kitchen until it overflows, symbolising abundance
- Aarti, prasad distribution and Brahman bhojan
Common mistakes families make
The most frequent error is shifting furniture and living in the house before the puja. Traditionally the family may keep belongings in the house, but the first night's stay should follow the Griha Pravesh. Another common mistake is scheduling the havan too late in the day, after the muhurat has passed.
